History of Higher Education
Mauritanian higher education was launched with the National School for Administration (Ecole Nationale d’Administration, ENA), in 1966. Two other institutions--the Advanced Institute for Islamic Studies and Research (Institut Supérieur d’Etudes et de Recherche Islamiques, ISERI), and the Advanced Center for Technical Education (Centre Supérieur d’Enseignement Technique, CSET) were established in 1979 and in 1980 respectively
Education in Mauritania
The first system of public education in Mauritania was established by the French colonial administration. The first schools were largely concentrated in the sedentary communities of the Sénégal River Valley. In 1950, the first teacher training school was established at Boutilimit, and in 1957, the secondary school in Rosso also began training teachers.
Mauritania System of Education
Backgroun:before the 1999 reform, there were two separated systems of education in Mauritania:The Arabic branch in which Arabic was the main language of studies. The Bilingual branch where the courses of study were mainly taught in French.In each branch only a few hours were spent in the other language and the rest of the courses were taught in full Arabic or in full French.
Policies, Strategies and Reforms
Within the framework of the 1986 national plan for economic, social and cultural development, the Government designated education as a key area for the future prosperity of the country. On the basis of that plan, short-term action programmes, which generally lasted about two years, provided the guidelines for the development and growth of the sector.

The Status of Education in Mauritania
Introduction In the past decade, the Mauritanian authorities have espoused the goal of universal enrolment by the year 2000, which the international community adopted in 1990 at Jomtien (Thailand). They have made basic education central to all development programmes and have implemented an education policy since 1990 with the aid of funding agencies. As a prelude to the Dakar Forum in April 2000, an assessment was made of progress in achieving the Jomtien goals.
